HOCKETING . . . notes towards a wider understanding:
"The clearest sounds I remember from days as a sound recordist
for film, is a pair of cicadas isolated from the background texture
of their relations, clicking and chirping a hocket-duet in slowly
phasing rhythm and pitch, . . like a looped eclipse of the moon".
In strictly musical terms 'hocketing' is the sharing of a rhythmic
and/or melodic line or phrase between two or more players, one part
resting while the other part(s) has a note or notes. The word 'hocket'
is derived from medieval music making, but the style is found all
over the world wherever people group to make rhythmic music, . .
. one source of reference for the GLOBAL HOCKETS concept ... but
there are others:
An essential element of hocketing is integration - the working
together and interlocking of parts, a procedure that has it's roots
in basic principles of masculine/feminine, active/passive, positive/negative,
sun/moon . . . primal universal forces of energy, creation &
renewal.
In nature, insects, birds, animals and humans all signal their
need and attraction for kind, via sound and sign; calls and response.
As stated by Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov - "all things under the
sun blaze, burn and boil for the unification of the two principles".
The feminine is integral to the masculine, and the masculine can
be found within the feminine, this is part of the universal law
and finding one's true nature on this level is to recognise and
unify one within the other, a kind of 'whole man' hocket.
On the higher level of the 5th dimension, this is the endless search
for the 'twin soul', the meeting of the lower self and higher self,
where the inner polarities of self are reconciled.
Hocketing in the domains of the social/political might be viewed
in terms of a dialectic, where opposing views are reconciled via
understanding and creative development; where folk talk to one another
rather than past each other ... a 2 way transmission/reception as
in the transmission of pure light: radiation, reception, reflection,
an idea that has resonance in the realm of heavenly/earthly exchange
... an interpenetration of body/mind/spirit.
In a more political sense, most systems of power and government
remain trapped in pairs of opposites, while a deep essence of co-operation
and equality remains preserved, symbolically embedded in grass root
forms of cultural pattern; weaving and other decorative arts and
crafts, folk dancing, and some sports with their implicit geometrics/esoterics.
The genuinely "Gung/Ho"(working together) takes
the competition out of the "ping/pong".
In a more scientific way, we could consider the push/pull interactivity
of harnessed polorities as a kind of hocket. At it's simplest electricity,
where the correct polar relations are required for energy to flow.
Connected wrongly, things short out. This is true also of the energy
flow within the body. Stagnant energy causes the body to malfunction.
On a more atomic level is electron flow and energy exchange, and
subatomically, 'strings' that express the notion of connectedness
between all things/materials/matter.
And in nature, from the macro dimensions of planetary motion down
to micro dimensions of cellular growth in body/plant/animal/insect
life etc. visual pattern is probably the most evident manifestation
of the hocket principle, representing interpenetrating forms and
shapes. As sound, language is the essential representation. In human,
animal, and insect communication - via aural sign and language -
a kind of random hocketing applies, a functional semiotics based
often on simple emotional and instinctive reactions to impulses
of fear/insecurity/desire and procreation.
"two crickets singing on a dirt path, high on the cliffs
of Punakaiki, one on each side of the track. I lay in the middle
spellbound, immersed in their miniature world." P.D
