Resource Books

THE FROM SCRATCH RHYTHM WORKBOOK by Phil Dadson and Don McGlashan. Published by Heinemann USA 361 Hanover St, Portsmouth, NH, 03801-3912, USA. A hands-on resource that uses a body based approach to rhythm and sound; stamping patterns, clapping and simple vocals. A wide range of rhythmic and compositional concepts are introduced in exercises and game forms that are both fun to do and musically satisfying in themselves. The exercises, developed via From Scratch experience, are graded from simple to more complex, and aim to develop and enhance rhythm skills for all kinds of performers. Introductions and discussion notes accompanying each exercise emphasize natural functions such as heartbeat, breathing, sleeping/waking and walking, to illustrate that our bodies are organized rhythmic systems and that this natural rhythm is the best basis for developing rhythmic skills. Also included are appendices on composition ideas and simple homemade instruments.
